Understanding Timeline

I try to figure out when a project needs to be finished by. This means figuring out a target date kept by higher ups. I see if there are any stipulations such as console targets, Marketing Schedules, or other goals.

Game Concept

I look at the game concept and understand what needs to be focused on. I make notes on any prototypes or GDD's making notes of how developed they are, how easy it could be to build on top of these core systems, and what are highlighted in the game itself.

Talk to Team

I talk to members of the team that I'm producing for. I understand what they specifically bring to the table from roles, to what excites them on the project, and what they aim to accomplish on the project. This lets me figure out what people will be motivated to do and gives me a better idea of what tasks should go to whom.

Mechanics Tier List

This helps me see the importance while comparing mechanics. It lets me see connections I may have missed before while also giving me a rough idea of what requires priority.

Writing User Stories

Writing User Stories

See the Bigger Picture

I see the overall system that is being worked on and I check if other epics have been made part of this Theme/Initiative and make sure there is no overlap. If this is a brand new project, I try to break down the Initiative into Epics.

For Cardboard Chronicles, one of the Initiatives I worked on was "Engaging Combat using Slam"

Understand where Epics may Cross Over

With how interlinked games tend to be, it's important to see where epics cross over one another. Epics I like to consider as sub-system of an overall mechanic.

For Cardboard Chronicles, Combat needed a health system which meant that player could take damage when hit and could recover health by talking to the doctor. These two use the same sub-system of the health stat meaning there needs to be more coordination over this and if I assign two people, I should assign it to the other's as well, so they stay in touch.

Breaking Down Mechanics

Using Prototypes, GDD's, or conversations with designers, I break down mechanics into a series of actions to perform. I try to picture this in my brain or use a MIRO board to try to plot out a second-by-second view of the system.

Think Like a Player

Using the MIRO Board, I delete all my notes and try to see if I understand what the different screenshots are for. I ask myself the question, "What should I be doing in this scene?"

This leads to the basics on a user story.

Check for Audio/Visual Feedback

Once I finish the Questions I go back to the screenshots and make another pass this time focusing on Visual Feedback and Audio Feedback. This usually helps fill in and find out more things not caught in-between by the designers

Show Team

I show the list to the team to see if I understood mechanic I'm currently breaking down. I pass it by the people I'm about to assign the task to and ask if they have any questions about the way I've written it or if they have tasks they want to write down.

Solving Issues

Solving Issues

I solved issues by using this format to handle any issues that might occur between the team. It encourages people to think about their position, why there might be conflicts, and try to figure out what solutions overlap to come up with a position that benifits everyone or as many people as possible.

User Experience Research

User Experience Research

While this doesn't typically fall in line with the role of a Producer, I've done it for several projects using the feedback to help guide future sprints and focus on bugs/important issues that we've missed.

I typically plan for one every 2-3 weeks for longer projects to get an idea of how players are playing the game and how it matches up with designer intention.

Harano - FOcus Groups

Harano was a game created by a group of students at DSK Rubika as part of their Thesis Project. They had plans to re-visit the game and make changes and alterations to it, so they could release it properly with the vision they originally had for it. This is a Focus Group I ran for it. It has my entire process and my results at the very end of the document.
